CO2 Smart Use halts its activities

The Start

In 2016, we joined forces with 26 partners to create a CO2 Smart Grid. CO2 Smart Grid was the predecessor of the CO2 Smart Use platform. Together with our partners, we carried out a thorough feasibility study on the prospects of a smart grid distributing CO2 in the western part of the Netherlands. The conclusions of that study resulted in this report. To upscale a national and international CCU economy, with CO2 Smart Use we started focusing on the pointy business end. We were and are still enthusiastic about the growing dynamics on CCU within the Dutch and European context and wanted to reinforce those dynamics.

CO2 Smart Use

Together with our partners OCAP, Glastuinbouw Nederland, Gasunie, Provincie Zuid-Holland and Natuur en Milieu Federatie Zuid-Holland, we invested in creating a platform with a website and community. This website and community aimed at developing and growing the CCU business. We did so by building a database of professionals and companies, by organizing events, creating connections between partners and by informing relevant parties. By doing so we wanted to position CO2 as the raw material of the future, helping the transition from a CO2-emitting to a CO2-absorbing industry.

Activities and Events

Our aim resulted in the following activities and events organized during the last few years.

  • Organizing CCU events at European Industry and Energy Summit 2020 and 2021.
  • Webinar on subsidy schemes (together with RVO and TKI Energie & Industrie).
  • Top 30 Event (with the frontrunners on CCU in NL).
  • Mapping the CCU Ecosystem in NL.
  • CCU Documentary (with Industrielinqs).
  • Monthly newsletters.
  • Interviews with members from the community (on the website).

In organizing all these activities and events, we saw the community growing, but also saw a change in the CCU market.

Why we push the pause button

With the CCU market becoming more mature and growing to a competitive level, we reflected on our own role in this. Securing enough resources and feedstock to make CCU products is becoming more relevant, which also explains why the market is becoming less pre-competitive. Since CO2 Smart Use was always meant to be a pre-competitive platform, this made us realize our role may become less relevant and necessary. In 2021, we also saw this change in website visits and attendance in our activities. Our newsletters with news about members still spiked attention, but events were attended less frequently, especially in the second half of 2021. Last year, we interviewed all Dutch industrial clusters to see whether there was a way to increase collaboration outside our current platform. We concluded that the clusters were more focused on regional CCU developments and propositions. All of this in combination with decreasing financial resources in financing this program, made us decide to stop our activities with CO2 Smart Use.

For the coming 6 months we will keep the website online, to let members still make use of the database. If any member has creative ideas to continue the network in some way, contact us. In the case of questions in regards of this announcement you can also contact through mark@nflux.nl.

Kind regards,

The CO2 Smart Use team

On November 4th, we are organizing a hackathon on CCU. More specifically, we will explore the world of building materials that capture CO2 and store it permanently. The reason for organizing this hackathon is creating awareness of and knowledge about these solutions, that can help us achieve our public and private goals on CO2 reduction.

Mark can tell you all about the CCU network and would love to help you connect with other parties in the CCU industry!
